The show Fleabag is just as filthy as its disgusting sounding name – and that’s what makes it so brilliant! Fleabag has one of the funniest, most outrageous and original openings of all time. I was both shocked and so glad to be watching it alone all at the same time. I mean, there is talk about…other types of sex within the first 5 minutes, so prudes beware. It’s a show that will have even the most sexually liberated blushing from the first episode to the last.
Season 1 of Fleabag introduces you to a woman with that exact nickname. We never find out her real name, as no one ever calls her by her name. Fleabag is recovering from the brutal suicide of her best friend, the loss of her mother to breast cancer and her crazy on-again-off-again relationship with her unstable boyfriend. Along the way, she meets a wide array of men (all of which she eventually beds) and struggles to keep her life from completely falling apart. Fleabag is not a very likeable person, not because of her sexual exploits, but because of how she treats and reacts to people. There is something about Fleabag however, that makes her somewhat lovable. Maybe it’s the fact that she lives in her truth and that her feelings toward her past are genuine. When you find out why fleabag is the way she is, you feel bad for her for about 5 seconds before she does something completely outrageous and shocking again; then you’re not sure if you like her or are disgusted by her.
Actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge is brilliant as the title character. Some moments with her are hilariously funny and other moments are very emotional and gut-wrenching. You experience funny and sad feelings often within one episode. Some of the more serious dialogue is truly beautiful and one scene almost brought me to tears, which was weird considering I was just laughing moments before.
As a woman myself, I find her character extremely easy to relate to. She just wants to live a happy life without having to worry about being respectable all of the time. Just when she thinks she’s regained control of her life, the rug is pulled right out from under her; I think we can all relate to that at some point in our lives.
Fleabag is such a pervert sometimes that she is almost completely unlikable, some how though you feel more and more drawn into her character with each episode. The first season is made up of only 6 episodes, which averages about 25 minutes each. I watched this show in just a couple of hours and was so glad I did. If you’re too embarrassed to watch this show with your friends, you’re going to want to tell them about it as soon as you’re done.
You can stream the entire first season on Amazon Prime. The show has been renewed, but a new season will not start until 2017 so you have plenty of time to catch up.
