Mad Dogs is a highly unusual, as well as highly praised, black comedy that aired its first (and only season) on Amazon Prime in January of 2016. The show received very little buzz around the streaming world, however, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worth a watch. In fact, it is most likely one of the best original shows that Amazon Prime has to offer. The TV poster for Mad Dogs is very reminiscent of the horror movie You’re Next. A man stands on a rocky cliff that jets out in the water with his back turned to the camera…and what looks like a cat mask on. The poster of the show is just as bizarre as the show itself. If you’re a fan of unusual dark comedies, then you’re going to want to read the rest of this post.

A group of 40-something-year-old guys gathers together to go visit their millionaire friend in Belize. At first, the world of Belize is beautiful and intoxicating. The waters are beautiful and the nightlife is always on fire. The friends feel like they’re in total paradise until things start to take a strange and unexpected turn. As the events grow darker, wilder (and somewhat comedic), a tale of lies, deception, and murder come spilling out. To tell you any more about the show would completely ruin the experience. Like with the celebrated drama Breaking Bad, Mad Dogs shines because of the completely unexpected plot twists it drops. Mad Dogs is a shocking thriller set against a beautiful and truly cinematic backdrop. The characters are very natural and the dialogue is very snappy. Although the events in the show are anything but normal, the show still has a very earthy vibe to it that makes some of the unusual turns in the series even more shocking.

The first season is comprised of 10 episodes that are about 55 minutes each. The series was written to only run for one season as the entire show’s plotline is wrapped up in the season finale. Amazon Prime was open to renewing the show due to its success but wanted to take it in a different direction than the producers. The producers were not willing to budge on their vision and neither was Amazon Prime so, the show was canceled. Don’t let this stop you from the enjoying the wild ride this show will take you on because from the first episode to the last, there is no way to know what will happen next.

Even though Amazon advertises the show as an Amazon Prime original, it is actually a remake of a foreign show that has been airing for 4 seasons. The American version of Mad Dogs is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
