Tim Burton is nothing but the definition of strange. His movies are both whimsical and macabre so, there is no better time than Halloween to explore some of his most wonderful films. Here are 5 Tim Burton films you must see this Halloween season.

  1. Beetlejuice: Beetlejuice may be one of the oldest films on this list, but it is definitely one of the best. Beetlejuice flips the standard ghost story on its head as two recently deceased people try to take back the house they lived in before they died. This was a career-making film for Michael Keaton due to his over the top (in a good way) performance of a really strange dead guy who performs reverse exorcisms. This film is already considered to be a Halloween favorite and if you’re one of the few people who haven’t seen it you must watch it this Halloween!

  1. Mars Attacks!: Mars Attacks! is one of Tim Burton’s most fun films. This movie pays hilarious homage to the alien movies of the 1960s. The special effects are purposefully bad, the alien’s appearances, exaggerated and crazy, and the dialogue is hysterical. With a cast like Jack Nicholson, Danny DeVito, Annette Bening and Martin Short, this film was bound to be a cult classic. It may not have been a blockbuster upon its release, but it is certainly one of his most fun and creative films to date.

  1. Edward Scissorhands: Edward Scissorhands is truly one of the most strange, yet beautiful love stories ever to hit the screen. A young man who was created with scissors for hands begins living in suburbia after living the beginning of his life in total isolation. With stand out performances from Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder and Dianne West, Edward Scissorhands is truly a modern day fairy tale.

  1. Corpse Bride: This macabre, yet hilarious claymation film is a Tim Burton movie that the entire family can enjoy. The dark and strange love story starts with a groom practicing his wedding vows in the woods. What he doesn’t know is that there is the ghost of a young woman listening nearby. The woman, desperate to be married and buried in her bridal gown, assumes the man is talking to her and swears to marry him. Despite the very dark topic of a dead bride, this film is funny and the visuals are amazing. This claymation tale is perfect to watch after a night of fun trick-or-treating.

Available on Netflix and Amazon

  1. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street: This film is definitely not for the little ones! Johnny Depp stars in yet another Burton movie, but this time he is The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. This Burton film is unique because it is the only other musical he’s done since The Nightmare Before Christmas. The story line is similar to the Broadway musical of the same name. Benjamin Barker, or Sweeney Todd, sets up a barbershop in order to get revenge against the man that took his wife and child from him and then exiled him to another country. This film is viciously dark and over the top gory. It’s a lot of fun for horror fans and it has been hailed as one of the Burton’s best modern work.

Available on Netflix.
