Halloween doesn’t have to be all about the blood, gore and screams. Sometimes, it’s a lot of fun to mix in some laughs with those blood-curdling shouts of terror. Here are three modern horror-comedies that are both funny and scary for you to stream on Halloween:

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)

This film has turned in to a Halloween favorite on Netflix and there is no question why. This film is a hilarious farce of the slasher drama with warm ratings from various review outlets (a tall order when it comes to the horror/comedy genre hybrid). The film follows two very different groups of people. Tucker and Dale are seemingly dumb rednecks who are vacationing in their cabin in the woods. A bunch of teenagers are also staying the woods for some vacation time. When their two worlds collide, blood will fly and laughs will be had. This film is praised by many for making fun of so many of the cliché characteristics of horror films that have been seen throughout the years. This is a film many watch at least once a year during the Halloween season and I’m sure you will too.

Odd Thomas (2013)

This quirky, 2013 creature film comedy starring the tragically late Anton Yelchin and Willem Dafoe sees Odd, a small-town, short-order cook who has a knack for clairvoyance. When Odd begins to see ethereal, creatures which feed on peoples’ pain and cause mass destruction, Odd teams up with his loving girlfriend and the town sheriff (Willem Dafoe) to get to the bottom of the mystery and save the town, along with the world at large. This creature movie is based on the best-selling novel by Dean Koontz, and features great chemistry between the lead cast of characters. Don’t let the review scores scare you away. This is one of those cases where the audiences enjoyed the movie much more than the critics.

Available on Amazon, YouTube, Vudu, iTunes, and Google Play

Sleepy Hollow (1999)

Tim Burton is the king of all things creepy, so it should come as no surprise that his funny and shocking retelling of Sleepy Hallow made the list. Most of the film is pretty serious, but it’s Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Ichabod Crane that will make you snicker throughout this gory, but oftentimes, humorous film. A headless horseman is riding around on his powerful horse decapitating prominent figures. Awkward and clumsy Ichabod Crane is sent to investigate these strange murders when hilarity (and gory bloodshed) ensues upon his arrival. A film that balances laughs and gothic scares perfectly, Sleepy Hollow is perfect to watch with your friends over for some Halloween fun!
