Interested in a comedic drama with a focus on romance and friendship? Meet Happy Endings, your new favorite all-American sitcom. This three-season ABC special, which aired from 2011 to 2013, features a tightknit, jolly group of friends from Chicago who have known each other for a whopping ten years. At the center of their group is Dave (Zachary Knighton) and Alex (Elisha Cuthbert), a formerly engaged couple who suddenly split on their wedding day. The first few episodes feature the initial trials and tribulations of the group as they readjust to the new social dynamics of losing their core pair. Friendships are strained as the group is forced to split their time between the former duo.
But the drama doesn’t end there. Endless attempts to move on are made, new flatmates are found, and Dave and Alex try to meet other people—but the couple can’t seem to leave each other alone (SPOILER ALERT: they even get back together sometimes). Nevertheless, their friends are in it for the ride—throughout the show, Brad, Max, Penny, and Jane continue to mediate, counsel, and support the couple through their sorrows.
Best of all, the show’s funny: stay tuned for racist parrots, sleepwalking, attempts to emulate a true Navajo Thanksgiving, and cost-free nights out. Slate described Happy Endings as a show that “buzzes with…improv energy all the time.” In concluding his review, Troy Patterson muses that “the more open-minded of hard-core Community fans may have found a new show.”
With a 7.7/10 rating on IMDb, this lighthearted, drama-packed comedy is definitely worth a try. All 22 episodes of the second season are available on Crackle here. (In case you have Hulu Plus, Happy Endings is also available here). Happy Bingeing!
