River is a Netflix original British series that recently began streaming. If you’re still on the fence about whether or not to watch this series the answer is: watch it now! Stellan Skarsgard stars as Detective John River, a detective slowly slipping in to insanity. River sees what he calls “manifestations” of dead people who meant something to him. It’s not clear in the beginning if River is slowly slipping in to madness or if he has a special sense. Either way, he makes for one complex character.
River is very typical of British shows. It’s dark, gritty and has a very moody main character. If you like Luther and The Fall, then this police drama is definitely for you. It’s not a police procedural by any means. The same plot line flows throughout all 6 episodes; it’s not your typical “ new murder case each week” fare. That’s a good thing!
If at first you think the series is boring, watch episode 2. The show really seems to come in to its own by episode 2 and the surprises don’t stop from there.
The show is currently airing in Britain, but the entire season can be streamed with a Netflix subscription.
