Did you get totally wrapped up in the macabre and dangerous world of Black Mirror and are foaming at the mouth until the dark show starts its new season on Netflix? Then, I think it’s time for you to darkly indulge in a new anthology of terror, Darknet. Darknet only has one season that contains 6 episodes of interlocked stories. What is it with horror shows and technology? Darknet takes a similar approach and explores the darker side of modern day life. The title itself is actually taken from real life technology: The Darknet. The Darknet is a computer network that resides deep inside the internet. It has very restricted access and is used to share very dark (and usually illegal) information.
Darknet invokes the same feelings of dread that horror anthologies such as Fear Itself, Masters of Horror and even The Twilight Zone did while taking things to a much darker level. The first episode starts with a young women listening to music and looking at a phone at a bus stop, a man tracking strange objects to a locker and a med student who thinks someone is trying to break in to her place. The second episode features a cop who questions a young woman about a murder in her building while not far away, a woman puts on a sexy show for a peeping Tom. What do all these stories have in common? You’ll have to watch the show to find out, but I can guarantee you’ll never be able to link them together until the very last minute.
The stories are gruesome and graphic. They feature sex and nudity so, violent content is a no brainer. This show is not for the faint of heart and is certainly not for younger horror fans. If you’re a more seasoned horror fan however, you’re going to want to add this to your Netflix Que right away. Be prepared, it’s very frustrating when you get to the end of episode 6 and there are no more shows to get wrapped up in. Each episode is only 25 minutes so, it’s very easy ( and quick) to binge on. There was talk of a season 2 being made, but considering the first season aired back in 2013 and nothing new has aired since, it’s safe to say this is all we’re going to get of this this horror gem.
